October blog entry

Cyprus has been my permanent home for nearly twelve years now, and I have only just realised how little of it I have seen! I live in a village, (rapidly becoming a town), on the outskirts of Larnaca. Larnaca is about centre of the South coast of Cyprus. With the relatively new motorways stretching from one end of the island to the other, there is easy access to all places of interest. Having said that, ALL of Cyprus is interesting.

I have visited all the main Towns and Cities of Cyprus, i.e. Paphos, Limasol, Nicosia, (The Capitol), Ayia Napa, but none have left a bigger impression on me than the small hidden away villages in the Troodos and surrounding mountains. I suppose the reason for this is that these places are relatively unspoilt by people and time itself. They remain ‘Villages’ with inhabitants of 200/300 or sometimes less. Here, Cypriot tradition and culture is very much alive. This is the Cyprus I remember!

This is a place I had the pleasure of staying at for a long weekend with friends. HUNTERS HOUSE in the village of Trimiklini. It’s a lovingly restored old courtyard cottage.

There are many such places but alas more and more are disappearing each year as the older generation go on to their next life and their children having no option but to move into the towns and cities for work. Some who can afford it are taking the opportunity to renovate and restore these old buildings and making them holiday lets. In MY opinion, once these places are commercialised they lose their quaintness and originality, but rather that than disappearing all together.
This blog entry has turned out to be a bit of an advert for Cyprus......and why not indeed!

Till next time.
